Thanksgiving Meme 2010

18 Nov

What better way to celebrate my absolute FAVORITE holiday than to post a Thanksgiving Meme!  Feel free to rip off and use yourself.

1. Which do you like better: hosting Thanksgiving at your home, or going elsewhere?

If I had a bigger place, I would totally love to host Thanksgiving.  Most of my adult years have been helping both my mom and dad plan the days at each of their homes.  I love planning, so I was all over that!

2. Do you buy a fresh or frozen turkey? Organic? Free-range?

We usually get a frozen bird and go from there.  I have never actually had to make the turkey myself (knock on wood) and am dodging the bullet again this year! 😉

3. Do you make stuffing or dressing? What kind?

I really don’t know the difference, but we always call it stuffing at our house.  Last year my stepdad made a really spicy stuffing with jalapenos I think.  I had just a little because it really had bite!

4. Sweet potato pie or pumpkin pie?

Pumpkin all the way! I used to make it as a teenager and into my 20s, but now we usually end up with one from Costco or Marie Callendars.  Yum.

5. Are leftovers a blessing or a curse?

Blessing!  We all take some home, and it makes for great breakfast, lunch AND dinner the next day!

6. What side dishes are a must-have in your family?

Stuffing and Mashed Potatoes/Gravy.  We never do the green bean casserole thing.

7. What do you wish you had that might make Thanksgiving easier?

A big house!

8. If/when you go to someone else’s house for the holiday, do you usually bring a dish? If so, what is it?

I am usually in charge of appetizers and drinks.  We love cream cheese stuffed celery, and I like to make a sparkling cranberry punch too.

9. What do you wish one of your guests would bring to your house?

A new great dish I’ve never tried!

10. What do you wish one of your guests would NOT bring to your house?

11. Do you stick with a particular menu from year to year, or do you mix it up?

For the most part, we have the same thing every year.  And I’m perfectly fine with that!

12. Is Thanksgiving a religious or secular holiday in your home?

Neither!  Sometimes we say what we’re thankful for, other times, we just dig in.  The guys watch football (but not MY husband!) and the girls cook and hang out.  It is always very informal and we have a great time.

13. Share one Thanksgiving tradition.

Growing up, my Grandpa would give out Turkey of the Year Awards.  Everyone would vote for whoever was the biggest dingleberry each year.

14. Share one Thanksgiving memory.

One year, my cousin Phil decided to run for Turkey of the Year, and campaigned the whole day.  It was really funny.

15. Name five things you’re thankful for.

My loving husband who adores me, crazy kids who test my patience every day, generous parents who never let us down, fabulous friends who put up with my shenanigans, and my faith.

Meme stolen from, who stole it from someone else, who stole it from someone else… etc. 😀

Winter Beach Day

4 Feb

Took the kids to Huntington Beach yesterday with a friend of mine and her kiddos. We had a great time! Grant LOVED the water and cried the entire way back to the car. Katie made sand angels! It was a good 80 degrees out and the beach was pretty much deserted on a Tuesday winter’s afternoon. Great for us!

We got a wig for Katie a couple months ago, and when Andrew put it on, I knew he looked like someone, but I couldn’t think of the name until yesterday.  It’s frightening, isn’t it?  I could barely stand to kiss him once he had the wig & glasses on.
Which is which? Andrew or Bruce Vilanch? You be the judge.
Scary, isn't it?!

Scary, isn't it?

Luckily, both the wig and the glasses came off and I was able to get a proper kiss.  But just thinking about it gives me the willies. (Sorry Bruce)
Happy Halloween. 🙂

Happy Birthday Pho54!

Jenn & me on my 20th birthday... 14 years ago!

At my bridal shower - 2005

Jenn and I met when we were 18 and fresh out of high school.  It was at a local mall and we were working at Bullocks (now Macy’s, I think!).  She worked in the children’s department, which was right next to the crystal/china department where I was.  (Who thought that up?  Let’s put the kids dept next to the china so they can break stuff.  Brilliant.)    We went out a couple times and have been friends ever since!  My family has even adopted her as their own.
Once, we found these crazy old potatoes, then decorated them and put them in my roommate’s bed and freaked him out.

My Jenn is so special to me… she is so thoughtful and wonderful!  She pampers me when I come to visit her and is the perfect hostess.  She drives over 2 hours to come visit me at the hospital when I am having babies or when my baby is in the hospital and brings me baked goodies.  She is a great wife and mother, and a PERFECT friend.
I love you JenniPho54!!

Katie turned three this weekend!  We had some friends and family over on Saturday and had a ‘Build Your Own Sundae’ party for her, complete with an Ice Cream Cone pinata!    Sunday, we went to an old friend’s house to celebrate his daughter’s second birthday.  Katie made some new friends and had a lot of fun at both parties.

My little Grant is 6 months already.  That boy loves to eat his toes, roll over and giggle with Mommy.  He is so content and happy.  If I didn’t go check on him during his nap, he would just lay(lie?) there eating his toes until he realized that he is hungry for real food.   We introduced him to baby food last month and he is loving it (though not the green beans so much!)  He sticks his thumb in his mouth between bites.

He’s not really cross-eyed… just in this picture! LOL

I had the pleasure of knowing my Great Grandma on my mom’s side.  She died in 2003 at the age of 105 1/2.   When she would write us letters, she would sign them GGR (Great Grandma Randall) and her age.  So, the last letter/card I got said GGR105.  Also, EVERY birthday, you could expect a card with $5 inside.  It didn’t matter that I was close to thirty years old, Grandma still sent me $5.  🙂  Every Christmas, she would buy socks and Avon earrings in bulk and you could expect to get a pair of either one.  LOL

My mom was going through my grandpa’s things the other day and came across a 15 page single space typed story of GGR’s life.  It starts with some of her first memories in 1904!  My mom brought the story over for me to scan in.  I haven’t had a chance to sit down and read it yet, though it is at the top of my list!  I want to make sure I have no interruptions so I can soak in all of this precious family history that Grandma Randall was wise enough to write down for us to read.

There she is in the middle of us back in 1984.  I’m the dark haired dork doing bunny ears on my brother.  Like my plastic shoes?

Happy Birthday Lisa!

20 May

I’ve known Lisa since I was a year old!  We used to play Atari and Nintendo together (diddo-dido), have fun sleepovers (twy to fly) where I would ALWAYS fall asleep first, and make fun of the neighbors (King Caller, Flubba, CONCEPTION! and Coco-Crotch).  Whenever I would ask her ‘Guess what?’ she would answer ‘You got your period?’.  When I finally did, she didn’t even guess right!

Today is her 34th birthday and she is STILL older than me!  Happy Birthday Lisa… Here is a walk down our memory lane!

I’m still pissed she got to be the princess when I had to be the clown.  I really was crying in this picture!

At the bus stop… I think she’s getting a headache because I won’t stop talking.  What a surprise.

Oh my.  Way too close up.

I was Elvira and she was a hockey player.

Before my graduation party.

Flaring my nostrils at the camera.  She knows I’m weird and still loves me after all these years!

Posing at Olan Mills.  I used to work there and got free pix when the photographers were bored.

Newport Beach Hard Rock – early 90’s.  I think she finally got rid of the bangs in 2000.  🙂

Pregnant with Grant, doing our prom pose.

At her wedding last month.

I love you girl!  Twy to fly!
