Thanksgiving Meme 2010

18 Nov

What better way to celebrate my absolute FAVORITE holiday than to post a Thanksgiving Meme!  Feel free to rip off and use yourself.

1. Which do you like better: hosting Thanksgiving at your home, or going elsewhere?

If I had a bigger place, I would totally love to host Thanksgiving.  Most of my adult years have been helping both my mom and dad plan the days at each of their homes.  I love planning, so I was all over that!

2. Do you buy a fresh or frozen turkey? Organic? Free-range?

We usually get a frozen bird and go from there.  I have never actually had to make the turkey myself (knock on wood) and am dodging the bullet again this year! 😉

3. Do you make stuffing or dressing? What kind?

I really don’t know the difference, but we always call it stuffing at our house.  Last year my stepdad made a really spicy stuffing with jalapenos I think.  I had just a little because it really had bite!

4. Sweet potato pie or pumpkin pie?

Pumpkin all the way! I used to make it as a teenager and into my 20s, but now we usually end up with one from Costco or Marie Callendars.  Yum.

5. Are leftovers a blessing or a curse?

Blessing!  We all take some home, and it makes for great breakfast, lunch AND dinner the next day!

6. What side dishes are a must-have in your family?

Stuffing and Mashed Potatoes/Gravy.  We never do the green bean casserole thing.

7. What do you wish you had that might make Thanksgiving easier?

A big house!

8. If/when you go to someone else’s house for the holiday, do you usually bring a dish? If so, what is it?

I am usually in charge of appetizers and drinks.  We love cream cheese stuffed celery, and I like to make a sparkling cranberry punch too.

9. What do you wish one of your guests would bring to your house?

A new great dish I’ve never tried!

10. What do you wish one of your guests would NOT bring to your house?

11. Do you stick with a particular menu from year to year, or do you mix it up?

For the most part, we have the same thing every year.  And I’m perfectly fine with that!

12. Is Thanksgiving a religious or secular holiday in your home?

Neither!  Sometimes we say what we’re thankful for, other times, we just dig in.  The guys watch football (but not MY husband!) and the girls cook and hang out.  It is always very informal and we have a great time.

13. Share one Thanksgiving tradition.

Growing up, my Grandpa would give out Turkey of the Year Awards.  Everyone would vote for whoever was the biggest dingleberry each year.

14. Share one Thanksgiving memory.

One year, my cousin Phil decided to run for Turkey of the Year, and campaigned the whole day.  It was really funny.

15. Name five things you’re thankful for.

My loving husband who adores me, crazy kids who test my patience every day, generous parents who never let us down, fabulous friends who put up with my shenanigans, and my faith.

Meme stolen from, who stole it from someone else, who stole it from someone else… etc. 😀

Saving money one coupon at a time.

10 Feb

Today at Stater Bros. I spent $41.84 and saved $39.88. Not bad. Even better was spending 39.96 at Ralphs and saving $55.42. Whoo hoo! I even got register coupons back for about $3.50 AND will get cash back from Ralphs for about $6.50 just on todays transactions. I’ll be off to Target later to get a few very cheap and/or free items.

A few of the sites helping me are:

Yeah, the couponing takes extra time, but since I’m a stay at home mom, I MAKE the time.  Cutting costs are part of my job.

Also, in these hard times many stores are accepting expired coupons.  My husband found a coupon for Harbor Freight that expired yesterday, and he called and spoke to the manager who said he would accept it as long as he brought it in.  (20% makes a difference!)  Also, many restaurants are doing the same (Pat & Oscars to name just one), so it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Anyone else want to share their ideas?

That’s all – just trying to share the love when we all could use an extra few bucks in our checkbooks.

Oh Christmas Tree…

29 Nov

We put up our tree a few days ago… though I prefer a real one, we can’t afford one (AND I get all rashy if I touch a real one!)  We got this one 90% off at Target’s after Christmas clearance last year.  Whoo hoo!

I didn’t buy one thing yesterday… not even from online.  This year’s Christmas will be slim pickings for us, but the kids will certainly not be at a loss for anything with all of the Grandparents around!  (Can you say Disney pass?) I’ll hit a few sales, but will mostly be making things this year.  A few years ago I posted about the fudge recipe I’ve been making for Christmas… it’s so easy!

Did any of you hit any sales yesterday?  What did you get?  Also did you hear about the poor WalMart worker who got trampled by the crowds and died as he tried to open the doors yesterday morning?  Despicable and very very sad.

Turkey Day!

27 Nov

I woke up to my daughter standing next to my bed telling me “Happy Thanksgiving!”  That was followed up by baby kisses a few minutes later when I picked Grant up out of his crib.  Happy Thanksgiving, indeed!

Today we’ll head out to my dad’s house and eat… here’s the menu…

Sparkling Cranberry Punch
Veggie Platter with Ranch Dip
Cream Cheese Stuffed Celery
Deviled Eggs (I’m going to make for the first time!)

Mashed Potatoes & Gravy
Broccoli & Cheese Sauce

Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie

Nothing too fancy, but good eats for sure!  Next year we’ll have another little blessing with us. 🙂

Thanksgiving 2007... just a few days away from giving birth to my own little turkey!

Hope everyone has a nice day.

Apparently, ‘They melt in your mouth, not in your hands’ doesn’t apply to 3 year olds.
